I am so excited and thankful that you have taken your time to read this and contribute!
My name is Abilene, I am competing in the Oregon Teen Mustang challenge! While this is not the first mustang that I have trained, this will be my first competition.
This program challenge is important to saving and protecting the mustangs which is a fundamental importance to the culture of our fellow Native Americans, it saves a horse’s life, keeps the romance of the West alive and shows the value of these wild spirits.
Currently approx. 62,000 wild horses and burros are in holding pens, leaving 73,000+ wild. Projections for the 2025 round ups will be an additional 10,000. This does not include the wild horse projects that are separate from the BLM, such as our local Warm Springs Reservation mustangs.
The Oregon Teen Mustang Challenge, and other programs such as this, saves thousands of horses throughout the USA from slaughter or put in holding pens where they stand around existing yet not living. I have a passion to use my horse training experience and train these beautiful beasts, giving them opportunities to be adopted into homes where they will have full lives.
April 24th I we picked up my mustang from the Burns BLM holding facility. I will have 100 days to “Gentle” it, to teach it to be a safe and dependable horse on the ground and with a rider. August 28-31 in Albany, OR. mustang trainers/competitors meet for a 3-day competition. At the end of the competition the horses are put up for adoption through the process of an auction. My goal is to train my mustang to the best of our abilities, garnishing attention, in hopes to increase its odds to go to a safe forever home.
By contributing, you not only save a horse’s life, but you will also be helping me cover expenses such as:
· Ferrier (hoof care)
· Vet care (dental and accidental)
· Horse feed (hay & supplements)
· Hauling costs (arena fees and fuel)
· Competition fees (entry fees, stall fees, lodging, etcetera)
The cost of horses adds up quickly, and even the cost of saving a horse is $1,000’s. I come from a single-mom -one- income home and so your contribution is vital!
